From Out of Space was my first landscape photography series. Initially, I used a 35mm film camera and low ISO films, preferring to present them as larger- scale handmade liquid photographic emulsion artworks, which involved painting a light-sensitive emulsion onto heavyweight watercolour paper in darkroom conditions. The two for sale on this page were made in 1998 and 2000.
I began using a medium-format film camera because I liked the symmetry of the square and then started photographing the landscape in earnest using both Konica infrared and Ilford PanF films to achieve both stark and high-quality images. I loved printing this series and each photograph represents time spent in the darkroom printing by hand and honing my technical skills.
After a few years of building up a portfolio, I exhibited the series at the Special Photographers Company in West London and from 2003-2007 sold them from Print Sales at the Photographers Gallery, in its original Covent Garden premises.
The photographs for sale are from my personal archive and are signed, dated and titled on the back of each print.
